Sony's first digital high-definition television (HDTV) establishes a new benchmark in picture performance no matter what you're watching or how you're watching it. During the transition from conventional to digital broadcasting, HDTV receivers will need to handle both high-definition pictures (with up to 1,080 scanning lines) as well as the existing broadcast standard for today's television (which originate with only 480 visible scanning lines). This Sony HDTV bridges the gap by enhancing conventional TV pictures by doubling the number of active scanning lines--and doubling the number of pixels on each scanning line. Based upon an analysis of thousands of HDTV picture patterns, Sony's Digital Reality Creation (DRC) replaces the normal NTSC patterns with their correct high-definition counterparts.
